Sever’s Disease Affects Young Athletes

There is a part of the heel that is known as the calcaneal apophysis. This is the growth center that connects the Achilles tendon to the heel. It can become inflamed in active children and young teenagers from participating in running and jumping activities. This can cause excessive tension on the Achilles tendon, and heel pain can ensue. This condition is called Sever’s disease and can worsen when the offending activity is pursued. The pain can also affect the calf muscle and may be more severe in people who have flat feet. An X-ray can be performed which can determine the maturity of the growth center, and can also help rule out a stress fracture. Treatment can begin with temporarily stopping the activity that caused the pain and resting the foot as often as possible. There are specific stretches that can be performed for the heel and Achilles tendon. Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Foot injuries in the workplace are classified into two general categories, injuries or slips and falls. Common foot injuries include punctures, crushing, sprains, and cuts. Among the other conditions that result in pain are calluses, ingrown toenails, and tired feet. Long periods of standing and the type of shoes worn may also contribute to foot pain on the job. High heels, pointed shoes, lack of arch support, and shoes that are too loose or tight may contribute to foot pain. Workplace safety experts recommend replacing footwear with better options. Included are shoes that grip the heel firmly, while the front of the shoe allows the toes to move freely. Choose shoes that fasten across the instep to help prevent tripping. The heels of the shoe should be no higher than 2.5 inches and no lower than the ball of the foot. Have the feet measured properly before purchase, and if the feet are different sizes, it is best to purchase the larger size. Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

Causes of Flat Feet in Adults

Adults who have flat feet may experience pain. It can happen occasionally or constantly, and often requires shoes that are worn to have adequate arch support. The majority of babies are born with flat feet, and an abnormal foot structure may cause the feet to remain that way through adulthood. Flat feet may also develop in people who become overweight, as a result of the added pressure the feet endure. Additionally, existing medical conditions such as diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis may lead to getting flat feet, and it may also happen to people as the aging process occurs. The possibility of spraining or fracturing the ankle may increase as the ankle rolls inward while walking, often causing the gait to change. Many patients find relief when specific stretches are performed that target strengthening the arch, and wearing orthotics may help to diminish any discomfort from having flat feet. What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.  

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
